Urban Agriculture Skills Training

In support of the Healthy Local Food System recommendations identified by the Bramalea SNAP Action Plan, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is working with local farms and organizations to support education and urban agriculture skills-building workshops.

These workshops address significant community interest in local food production, harvest distribution and sharing, and development of gardening and urban farming skills.

Urban Agriculture Activities

Since 2023, Bramalea SNAP residents have been engaging in hands-on urban agriculture experiences through seasonal visits to McVean Farm in Brampton.

Led by the Black Youth Farming Collective (BYFC), a youth-led not-for-profit based at the farm, participants have taken part in farm tours, transplanting workshops, seed saving, and crop harvesting.

Beginning in 2024, the program expanded to include visits to Albion Hills Community Farm.

These new sessions introduced even more activities, such as native hedgerow planting, pollinator-themed art, beehive visits, and food preservation workshops, including DIY hot sauces and pickling.

A total of six workshops have been held across both farms in 2023 and 2024.
