Program Levels:
Course Types:
In this program, students will learn and practice map and orienteering skills.
Students are introduced to the basic features found on most maps: symbols, lines, scales, title, date and map grid. Students will learn and practice map and orienteering skills such as: reading a map, orientating maps in the correct direction, operating a compass and following a map route
Students will start with a small practice course to hone their skills. Older students will move to a larger area, where they will work in teams to find their way to a series of control points. Younger students do a mapping exercise, producing their own map based on a grid system.
Preparation:
Programs always have an outdoor component. Groups should dress for the conditions on the day of their visit. Before your visit, please discuss the importance of dressing appropriately for outdoor activities. On days of inclement weather the program will be modified to include some indoor activities along with the outdoor components.
Half day, available all year.
