Program Levels:
Grade 4
Course Types:
Afternoon, Day Visit, Morning

In this program, students will visit different habitats to identify producers, consumers and decomposers, and will examine the links between living and non-living elements.

This program introduces the concept of a natural community and the abiotic and biotic factors that control the number and type of plants and animals that live within it. Students discover the major groups (consumers, producers, decomposers) within the food web of Southern Ontario and learn how they interact to function as a whole.

Students investigate the physical and behavioural adaptations of plants and animals that ensure their survival in their specific habitats. They also discuss the effects of human activities on these habitats and on the plants and animals living there. Students learn how animals become endangered and how they can help protect these environments.

All students will have an opportunity to participate in games and hands on activities to illustrate these concepts.

Preparation:
Programs always have an outdoor component. Groups should dress for the conditions on the day of their visit. Before your visit, please discuss the importance of dressing appropriately for outdoor activities. On days of inclement weather the program will be modified to include some indoor activities along with the outdoor components.

Half day, available all year.
