Local ‘Watershed Champion’ Irene Jones Recognized

Irene Jones

On Sunday, July 24, 2016, Irene Jones, a lifelong supporter of the work of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), was recognized for all of her contributions and service to the community as city councilor and as an environmental champion with a ceremonial tree unveiling and celebration.

Irene’s long list of accomplishments include being a past member of the TRCA board and was one of the first members involved in the development of the Etobicoke-Mimico State of the Watershed Report. She was also a driving force behind numerous waterfront and watershed projects. Always a champion for the Etobicoke and Mimico Creeks watershed, she engaged youth and seniors in environmental activities. She became a member of the Etobicoke-Mimico Task Force in 1999 and remained involved when the Etobicoke-Mimico Watersheds Coalition replaced the task force in 2002. Over the years Irene acted as chair, vice-chair, and co-chair of the Coalition.

The TRCA is lucky to have Irene as both a champion and a friend and congratulates Irene on this well-deserved recognition!
