If a tree has fallen and damaged your property:
If a tree has fallen onto your property and has caused damage for which you are seeking to make a claim, your first point of contact should be your home insurance company. Your insurance company will then work with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and TRCA’s insurers to determine if there is any liability on the part of TRCA.
It is, however, TRCA’s position that it is not liable for trees falling due to storms or other acts of nature. Living next to a natural area has many benefits including shade, fresh air and scenic views. Unfortunately, a tree falling from time to time is simply a counterpart to some of these benefits.
If you have a concern about a tree:
If you have a concern about the safety of an existing tree on what you suspect is TRCA property, you may use the form below, or contact us at 416.661.6600 | info@trca.ca.
If you are contacting TRCA by phone or email, you will be asked to provide the following:
- Your name, address, and phone number
- The location of the tree in question
- A photograph of the tree (if available);
- Information as to whether or when you might have reported this to TRCA in the past
- If the tree has fallen, information on the date, time and location where it fell
TRCA will make every effort to determine if the tree in question is managed by TRCA. If it is, a staff person will schedule a time to visit the property. Staff visits are conducted during normal business hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. We may need to have someone at your home to grant TRCA access to your property.
Please note: TRCA will only respond to potential hazard trees per our policies and procedures for managing hazard trees. TRCA does not have the capacity to undertake debris removal, pruning or cleanup services for neighbouring properties.
TRCA does permit neighbours to prune unwanted branches of trees that might overhang onto their property from TRCA lands. However, tree work can be dangerous. TRCA recommends always enlisting the services of a qualified tree care professional. And please confirm with TRCA staff that the tree does, in fact, originate on TRCA land prior to undertaking any tree work.
To receive confirmation, call 416.661.6600 or email info@trca.ca.
