Course Types:
Students will learn how satellite-based GPS technology works, what it can be used for and how it relates to top,ographical maps. They will also gain experience using the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate system.
Students are first introduced to Global Positioning System by means of a PowerPoint presentation. Outside, students will be shown how to use handheld GPS units to navigate.
The program culminates with an advanced orienteering challenge that has students working cooperatively in small teams, using GPS units to navigate to checkpoints.
GPS GreenCheck Certification (full day) is available for an additional fee.
