By solving a soil mystery, students will learn about soil components and the impact humans can have on soil characteristics required for plant growth.
Students will also compare what can grow in different substrates of the manufactured landscape of Tommy Thompson Park. Through a water filtration experiment, students will gain an understanding of the impact humans can have on soil compaction, and soil characteristics required for plant growth.
Preparation:
Appropriate clothing and footwear for weather conditions. Please note that Tommy Thompson Park experiences more variable weather than much of Toronto. Wear extra layers in colder seasons, and extra sun protection in warmer seasons. The entire field trip takes place outside. There is no running water in the park.
