What happens to our garbage once we’re done with it? Where do our discarded food wrappers, bottle caps, plastic straws, and more end up, and how do they impact our local environment?
During this two-hour in-school program, students will learn through interactive games and activities:
- How to identify floatable litter and microplastics
- How floatable litter and microplastics harm local freshwater habitats and the creatures that live there
- What is being done in Toronto to reduce waste through the Floatables Strategy
- What we can all do to make our communities more sustainable and protect nearby freshwater
The program will conclude with a call to action for students to become environmental stewards in their own neighborhood.
Teachers will be provided with a loan of a litter cleanup kit and instructional resources that will enable you to guide students on a litter cleanup and waste audit of a nearby ravine or shoreline space. Data from your class litter cleanup will be collected and used for our Toronto-wide floatable litter community science initiative!
Note: This program includes a teacher-led litter cleanup after the TRCA-led in-class visit.
