Students visit a nearby pond or stream and assess the water quality using a variety of field tests including: pH, temperature and the collection of aquatic invertebrates.

They learn to properly interpret their findings and make recommendations on next steps to improve or maintain the water quality in their local pond or stream.

Preparation:
It is the teacher’s responsibility to select a safe site for the children to visit. Sites with gentle slopes to the waters edge are the most suitable. Be aware of the potential of flooding during the spring months. Students must wear appropriate footwear for working around water (closed toed shoes and/or rubber boots).
* Note: Students do not need to go into the water to conduct the experiments.
