2021 Toronto Urban Design Award for the Meadoway

September 21, 2021, Toronto, ON – Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is delighted to be a recipient of a Toronto Urban Design Award for The Meadoway.

The award of excellence was given under the category of Visions and Master Plans for redefining our understanding of public and recreational open space by transforming 16 kilometres of underutilized hydro corridor and creating new amenities and trails in spaces once considered off limits.

The Meadoway adds exponential park space to the city while connecting ravine ecosystems and wildlife habitats. The City of Toronto’s award acknowledges the significant contributions the project has demonstrated as a model of building relationships between communities, utility companies, philanthropists, and conservation authorities.

With generous support from the Weston Family Foundation, TRCA in collaboration with Toronto design firm Perkins&Will and Future Landscapes, developed a Visualization Toolkit for the design of a community-powered greenspace that connects people and communities across the city.

The Meadoway will use nature to connect Toronto’s downtown from the Don River Valley to Rouge National Urban Park. It will serve as a blueprint for revitalization, a world-class example of active, linear greenspace, and a precedent for future hydro corridor restoration.
