At Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) we use the term “Environmental Assessment Review” to include applications made under federal and provincial impact and environmental legislation and regulations.
Application types include:
Federal Impact Assessment Act (IAA), as managed through the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC).

Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) as managed through the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), including:

SEA applications are further broken down into sub-classifications which include: Class, Project List, Declaration Order, Designation Regulation, and Exemption Regulation EAs, all of which are managed through municipalities, as well as various agents of the Crown including Metrolinx, Hydro One, and others.
Energy regulations, including the Canadian Energy Regulator Act (CERA) and the Ontario Energy Board Act (OEBA) and exempting regulations. Note that projects undertaken by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator are managed through the OEB process.
