Invaders of the Great Lakes: A Virtual Workshop

October 16, 2021 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Jasmine Thompson

They’re big, they’re destructive, and they might be coming our way! A group of invasive fishes called the Asian carps are some of the greatest threats to the Great Lakes. What threat do they pose to our environment, and what can we do? This virtual workshop will teach participants everything they need to know about Asian carps and how they could impact aquatic ecosystems in Toronto.

Participants will learn about the different species of Asian carps and the history of their arrival in North America. We will share tips and tricks on how to identify them, useful resources, and what we can all do to aid in the prevention of these invasive species.

This presentation is intended for general audiences:

  • Beginner level information
  • Includes intermediate concepts
  • Content intended for older youth and adult audiences.

TRCA is committed to creating an accessible experience for all participants. If you require an accommodation, please email Jasmine Thompson at at least 7 days prior to the event.

This event is Part One of a two-part event series, hosted in partnership with Toronto Public Library. Part Two will be an in-person guided exploration of two different aquatic ecosystems at Tommy Thompson Park, where participants will view the infrastructure in place that prevents the spread of invasive fish species. Register for the in-person experience.
