The National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) was developed as a certification and training program to set standards for designers, inspectors, contractors, and maintenance staff involved in the design, construction, and operation and maintenance of Green Infrastructure (GI) practices.

This program offers participants the opportunity to gain expertise in GI materials and vegetation, construction practices, site safety, and management for long term performance.  GI practices include bioretention, permeable/porous pavements, rainwater harvesting, green and blue roofs, dry wells, and constructed stormwater wetlands.

The course offers the participant on-line access to training modules, allowing the participant to train at their own pace, followed by a 16 hour in-class review to prepare for the certification test.  The test will be administered in the classroom, following the in-class portion of the training.

The benefits of becoming certified by the NGICP include:

  • Expansion of your skills and knowledge of building, inspecting and maintaining GI systems
  • Greater awareness of GI career opportunities
  • Proof of your commitment to supporting sustainable performance of GI practices
  • Exposure to employers looking to hire skilled GI workers through the NGICP Certification Database

The implementation of the NGICP is governed by Bylaws and a Policy and Procedures Manual.  To learn more about the NGICP, please visit
